The Irish football team are not the most talented team in the world but they do have the ability to play with great passion and they bring the country closer together when they play at a major tournament. The romance with the Irish public and the Irish football team began way back in 1988 under Jack Charlton when they beat England in their first major tournament, the European Championships. For the next eight or so years the team was quite successful until Jack left. The team began to struggle and wouldn’t reach a major tournament until 2002 and that didn’t go to plan as we all know. It was ten years before Ireland would get their again only to lose every match and be humiliated, but four years later in France the 2016 European Championships took place and Ireland stood up and played with passion and even beat a major nation Italy before losing out unfortunately to the french in the knockout rounds. No trophy came home from France but a refreshed love for the team came home with all the fans who made the trip.
